Furse started in 1893 when William Joseph Furse acquired the premises and steeple jacking business of Joshua Till, on Burton Street in Nottingham. Starting with one employee, Mr Furse improved and expanded the business. Recognising at an early stage the growing importance of electricity, he diversified into electrical installation, and opened a workshop in Goldsmith Place for the manufacture of switchgear and components.

The next seven years to the turn of the century saw a relocation to Traffic Street, and the further development of the business into a multi-disciplined engineering concern, adding lift and theatre equipment manufacture and installation to its existing activities.

The theatre products division was sold off to CCT Lighting in 1988

The Strand Electric Company began operating in 1914 to serve London’s theatre district. Set up by two London theatre electricians Arthur Earnshaw and Phillip Sheridan.  In 1926 Century Lighting opened for business in New York to serve Broadway.  In 1968 Strand Electric became Rank Strand.

Today, Strand Lighting, the union of these two companies, continues as the world’s leading name in stage, television, motion picture, and architectural lighting and services.

In 2006 Strand Lighting became part of the Genlyte Group. Genlyte is a collection of over 40 lighting companies with a wide range of specialties from architectural lighting and control to street lighting and entertainment lighting and control with Vari*Lite and Strand Lighting anchoring their entertainment lighting offering.
